Since the Haddon Township Education Foundation started in late 2017, we have awarded more than $250,000 in grants.
This grant will provide the High School Earth and Space Science class an interactive, data-driven experience that uses real-world problems in all facets of science. The class will be able to utilize the program to learn from a series of unique lessons in astronomy, geology, meteorology, paleontology, physics, chemistry, and environmental science.
This grant will provide Van Sciver Elementary School students with equipment to learn the game of chess. Learning chess will provide students with a creative outlet to develop problem-solving skills, overcome fear of taking risks, improve concentration, and teach children to assume responsibility for their decisions.
This grant will provide Rohrer Middle School and High School Mandarin students supplemental materials that will complement and expand the current curriculum. The readers allow students to cover a wide range of new vocabulary and provide the opportunity to expand their language skills.
This grant will provide High School French students the ability to utilize an expanded class library for “Free Voluntary Reading”. The additional material in the class library allows students to read in French for pleasure in a low-stress and mentally stimulating environment.
This grant will provide Jennings Elementary School students reading materials to expand vocabulary acquisition, enhance reading comprehension and encourage class discussions. Core Books also allow for the teacher opportunities to have students build writing skills through exercises after books have been read.
This grant will provide High School Chemistry students with a new electronic balance that is much more accurate than current class balances. The more accurate balance allows students to conduct a wider range of experiments where very precise mass measurements are needed.
This grant will provide High School English teachers a tool to assist and improve College Prep students' writing skills. The HMH Writable platform affords students and teachers engaging and differentiated lessons to evolve and grow as writers inside and outside the classroom.
This grant will provide the High School “Technology in Music” class modernized equipment to utilize when working on lab assignments and projects. The new equipment provides students the ability to explore more advanced production techniques while making music and creating compositions.
This grant will provide High School “Anatomy & Physiology” students with an anatomically correct life size human skeleton model to learn about structure and function of the human body. The model will be used in the classroom as 3-D, tangible tool when covering skeletal, muscular, nervous and reproductive systems.
This grant will provide Edison and Stoy Pre-school students a listening station where “books on tapes” will be used during reading exercises. The listening stations will allow young students starting their reading journey a complementary learning tool while navigating physical books.
This grant will provide district wide 3rd-8th grade G/T and “at-risk” Math students with an innovative, AI-driven mathematics platform to enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Magma Math analyzes a student's work while using AI driven analysis to identify errors and encourage conceptual reasoning to increase proficiency in mathematics.
This grant will provide the High School Science Department with a new College Prep Chemistry curriculum providing learning tools for the student body taking this class. The OpenSciEd curriculum will allow College Prep Chemistry students, no matter what grade or proficiency level, access to an engaging approach to Chemistry fostering a positive learning experience.
This grant will provide Van Sciver Elementary School Special Education students with age-appropriate life-skill and pre-vocational materials to apply academic skills to a functional setting. The Pathway to Independence materials will provide additional resources and new activities greatly expanding the current program.
This grant will provide Jennings Elementary School students with a Sensory Path during movement breaks and sensory needs. The Sensory Path has been shown in other district elementary schools for students to release excess-energy, improve motor skills, balance, hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness.
This grant will support the Edison school and also be shared with all district kindergarten classes. The dramatic play will create a structured activity in which students can learn problem solving skills, increase creativity and express themselves while gaining social skills. Themed areas will allow teachers to foster a classroom environment that students can use to be creative and think imaginatively.
This grant supports Rohrer Middle School by providing funding for Writable software which allows teachers to evaluate student writing utilizing generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Writable software provides teachers with the tools to create and adapt writing assignments aligned with Common Core standards. Use of the Writable AI software as an assistive tool empowers students to self-assess their progress through rubrics and grammar aid and greatly reduces turnaround time for reviewing work so students have more time with corrective action.
This grant will support the Haddon Twp. High School science students with making a connection between atomic theory and the properties of substances. Students will be able to bring the molecule structure to life on the district iPads. Utilizing the app, students will have more autonomy to design molecules that will be more scientifically accurate then when previously using wooden atom models.
This grant will support the High School Advanced Placement Environmental Science classes by providing the students with the novel “Not Too Late”. After reading the novel, students will have the chance to reflect on current environmental challenges (like climate change) and how these issues could have an impact on their future. The book should also help students better prepare for the AP College Board test since the issue of climate change accounts for 15%-20% of the exam.
This grant will support the Strawbridge Elementary School 5th grade students with more diverse reading resources. These resources will allow students access to more inclusive and culturally responsible reading material. The books chosen will provide a wide range of cultural and socioeconomic differences that can be discussed in the classroom to affirm student cultural identities while also developing positive insights about others.
This grant will support elementary school kindergarten and first grade classes to purchase non-fiction magazines that are effective in helping student vocabulary and language skills. Many of the elementary school libraries currently contain mostly fictional books and stories. The expectation is that non-fiction material in these magazines will provide students with the tools to make real-world connections to their own personal experiences while building a solid foundation for vocabulary and reading skills.
This grant will support the reading intervention program at all (5) elementary schools to help improve student reading benchmarks. The Decodable Readers will support structured, research-backed instructions of phonetic concepts by providing practice for each concept. District Literacy Interventionists will gauge a student’s progress after using the Decodable Readers when DRA and DIBELS assessments are conducted.
This grant will fund the purchase of a tactile globe for the Haddon Twp. High School special education history classes so students can better visualize the word as whole. Students will expand their global awareness by adding a tactile component to the geography lessons. This will supplement the multimodal, internet approach to learning these days with a physical globe that students can learn about the world as a whole.
This grant will support Van Sciver School 4th Grade social studies classes when the “Natural Resources of the United States” unit is being taught. The books provide students supplemental information on the national parks and will be used for the multimedia slide show brochure unit assignment. The information gathered on specific national parks will also be used in a cross-curricular activity during ELA.
This grant will support the Rohrer Middle School science teachers to have a common set of problem solving activities for 6th through 8th grade. Science teachers will coordinate a crime scene activity during the same week so classes across multiple grades can work together to solve the “crime”. The goal is to promote critical thinking and collaboration using a fun, engaging activity.
This grant will fund 100 Lexia licenses to be used by the Literacy Intervention program at all elementary schools in the district. Lexia is a research-based literacy program that systematically builds foundational literacy skills using data to target and individually tailor student instruction to specific student needs. The program provides teachers with valuable feedback, data and activities to address student literacy deficits both online and during small group Tier 2 instruction.
This grant will support the Rohrer Middle School by funding three wall-mounted dispensers for menstrual products. New Jersey legislation recently passed requires schools to have at least 50% of female and/or gender-neutral bathrooms to provide these products for free. These wall-mounted, tamper resistant dispensers will replace the small, plastic boxes currently used which only hold a small amount of menstrual products and are often vandalized or stolen.
HTEF will be donating twenty Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus graphing calculators to the Haddon Twp. High School math department. Though student iPads have a calculator function, iPads are not allowed when students take the SATs. Students who do not own a graphing calculator can familiarize themselves with the functions throughout the school year so they are better prepared when taking the SATs.
